This year is Benjamin Britten's centenary and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra is celebrating in some style with the second in a series entitled Big on Britten. Declan McGovern, RTÉ NSO General Manager joined Artbeat's Des FitzGerald to talk about this fascinating composer.

Born in the fishing port of Lowestoft in Suffolk, on England’s east coast, the sea always had a strong pull on Britten and the Four Sea Interludes is the the most outstanding example of this influence. Composed as orchestral pieces to divide the opera Peter Grimes: Dawn; Sunday Morning; Moonlight and Storm capture the North Sea in all its moods. Britten spent the early part of the Second World War in America and the concert reflects this with Bernstein’s On the Town (Three Dance Episodes) and Copland’s ballet score Appalachian Spring. Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, based on a selection of six nocturnal poems by, among others, Blake, Jonson and Keats also features.

The sedate atmosphere cherished by most, for Aga as an adoptive citizen, it feels strangely intimidating. What on another day might feel like a new home, stripped of its midweek bustle and vigour, seems foreign and desolate to Maru."

Artbeat 20 March 2013 | National Chamber Choir's Christina Whyte on Arvo Pärt’s Passio; Robert Kearns of 10 Days in Dublin festival

In recent years it's become impossible to turn on late night eclectic radio shows without hearing Arvo Pärt’s compositions. This Estonian composer's work has become shorthand for a sense of escape from modernity’s aural overload. Born near Tallinn in 1935 he witnessed the Soviet occupation of his country. His early work was often at odds with the Soviet system; he became the first Estonian to use Schoenberg’s famous 12 tone technique. Becoming more overtly religious in his output, Pärt retreated and developed his own version of plainsong: ’Tintinnabulation’, music based on the sound of bells, where the melody and voice are one. Passio, written after Pärt’s exodus to Berlin, is based on St John’s text. Conducted by a leading expert on Pärt’s work, Paul Hillier; the concert also features Theatre of Voices, Denmark and YXUS Ensemble, Estonia. Artbeat's Des FitzGerald spoke with Christina Whyte of the National Chamber Choir about the upcoming performance of Passio.

Arvo Pärt’s Passio - National Chamber Choir of Ireland
Tuesday 26 March, 8pm Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin
Tickets: €20/€15 (Conc) - Bookings through the National Concert Hall Box Office: 417 0000 or nch.ie

10 Days in Dublin, Ireland’s only open-format festival, is back for its third year and is currently open for registration to artists of any discipline who want to take part. Joining Des on Artbeat to talk about the festival is Co-founder Robert Kearns. Registrations will remain open until April 5th and interested acts can find more information plus a registrations guide on the website http://www.10daysindublin.com/submit/

It's World Book Day tomorrow (7 March). Over 1 million free tokens have been distributed to children in schools nationwide, courtesy of Irish booksellers. This year Irish children’s author Judi Curtin has penned one of these special books for World Book Day 2013. Judi joined Des FitzGerald on Artbeat from her home in Limerick.

From the World Book Day press release:

World Book Day is Ireland's biggest reading event, was designated by UNESCO, as a worldwide celebration of books and reading and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. Book related events will be taking place this week all over Ireland.

The aims of World Book Day: The main aim of World Book Day in Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. It might seem very simple, but not all children have books at home. We’d like to get the message out about encouraging children to read and that there is a free book for all primary school children with their voucher, so that their parents know about it.

This is the 16th year of World Book Day and over those 16 years more than 20 million tokens have been issued to Irish children from Irish booksellers at a cost of 24 million euro.

The full list of €1.50 books for 2013 is:

Suzanne Parker talked to artist Alana Richards from her home in Berlin. From her own website: "Born in 1985, Alana Richards’ paintings are based on dark emotions – both experienced and imagined. After leaving her hometown of Cork, Ireland, at an early age, Alana has wandered, studied and lived - always impulsively." alanarichards.co.uk

Artbeat Extra - Jazzorama interview with Thought-Fox's Lauren Kinsella

Jazzorama's Des FitzGerald in conversation with Thought-Fox's Lauren Kinsella.

Lauren Kinsella, jazz vocalist and leading light behind Thought-Fox has travelled the globe over the last few years perfecting her singing. Spells spent studying South Indian vocal technique in Bangalore and a music scholarship to Sweden's Fridhems Folkhögskola have given Kinsella's sound a very individual flavour. Graduating from Newpark Music School in 2010, Kinsella has recently begun her Masters in jazz singing at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Amid all this academic fervour she’s found time for Thought-Fox's debut CD. Released on Diatribe Records as part of Music Network's Musicwide programme, ’My Guess' was produced by noted saxophonist Nick Roth. Tonight Dubliners have a chance (gratis) to see the quintet in action at the CD launch party. On the strength of this reviewer's listening - expect the album to sell like hot cakes.

Saturday 1st December, Dublin

The Grand Social, 35 Lower Liffey Street, 8 pm, Admission free, laurenkinsella.com

Artbeat 21 November 2012 | Kevin Brady with Irish Baroque Orchestra

This week sees the Irish Baroque Orchestra bring jazz and classical music together and baroque with drummer Kevin Brady. Before Artbeat's Des FitzGerald began his interview with Kevin he played some of the first movement of Groove Theory (called Trip the Light Fantastic), as performed in a live recording by Monica Huggett and the Portland Baroque Orchestra.

Composed by jazz violinist Hollis Taylor (USA), 'Groove Theory' was inspired by the scientific notion of String Theory, which is a way of explaining the existence of our universe. Through her music, Hollis creates her own “theory of everything”, in which all music must swing and dance, sway, pulse and groove.

Groove Theory will feature fifteen musicians and audiences will be able to participate in a post show discussion (lunchtime concerts only) with Monica Huggett and other invited experts to discuss the work presented. For the evening concerts, the programme also includes works by 18th century Hungarian and, intriguingly, Romani composers.

Dates:

1.00pm 22nd November: Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Limerick (Just 'Groove Theory')
8.00pm 22nd November : The Ballroom at Seapoint, Salthill, Galway (Full concert)
1.00pm 23rd November: Project Arts Centre, Dublin (Just 'Groove Theory')
7.00pm 23rd November: St Peters Church, Portlaoise (Full concert)
8.00pm 24 November: Civic Theatre,Tallaght, Co. Dublin (Full concert)

Groove Theory is supported by an Arts Council Touring Award. Visit irishbaroqueorchestra.com for more details.

Artbeat 24 October 2012 | Object for Our Times; Bram Stoker Festival

Back in February 2011, the Irish Times began 'A History of Ireland in 100 Objects' written by Fintan O'Toole. Looking at Ireland through objects of all kinds, many of which are on display at the National Museum's various locations, the weekly series comes to an end in January. The final item, object 100, represents the early years of the 21st Century. Here to tell Artbeat's Des FitzGerald more, and how the public can vote for the object that best represents contemporary Ireland, is the curator of the exhibition, Lar Joye.

Visitors can vote in person in the Exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, using the ballot paper provided or can vote online by visiting 100objects.ie which contains information on the ten shortlisted objects. Votes can be cast up to midnight on Sunday, 18th November and the results of the public ballot will be taken into consideration when the 100th object is chosen.

The inaugural Bram Stoker festival is taking place, appropriately enough, over the Halloween bank Holiday weekend in Dublin. It's also, fittingly, one hundred years since this Clontarf born native died. Famous for giving the world Dracula, the festival hopes to peel back the many layers Stoker had, and have some fun at the same time. Artbeat's Frank Black spoke to former Lord Mayor of Dublin (and instigator of the festival) Andrew Montague about Stoker and some of the upcoming weekend's highlights.

Artbeat 10 October 2012 | Gavin Murphy 'On Seeing Only Totally New Things'

If you were out and about in Dublin last weekend, you won't have failed to notice the many buildings opened specially for the Open House weekend. It's true to say that we are more engaged than ever with the architecture around us - and noting that much of it unique and worth preserving.

An interesting video installation piece 'On Seeing Only Totally New Things’ exploring the theme of architectural impermanence is currently on show at the RHA Gallery and joining Artbeat is the artist concerned, Gavin Murphy.

From the RHA press release accompanying the exhibition:

“One of the most familiar of Dublin’s twentieth-century buildings is shortly to be demolished after a life of only 35 years. It is the old IMCO complex on Merrion Road, which is bowing out to make way for a new office and showroom development.”
Newspaper article circa 1975, source unknown.

Something New Under the Sun is a film concerning ideas around progress, novelty, value, our experience and perception of time and the contemporary, via an attempted portrait of the demolished IMCO building, and the work of its chief designer, Oliver P. Bernard. The IMCO building was, during its brief existence, a major landmark on Dublin’s south coast, yet is all but forgotten today. Similarly, the industrial processes that the company carried out, once part of the fabric of everyday life, are entirely undocumented. IMCO were a large firm of dry cleaners who ran a central cleaning and dying plant in Dublin, alongside approximately 50 branches taking delivery of items of clothing from all over the country. A weekly sponsored radio programme, featuring owner Louis Spiro and presented by Eamonn Andrews, made IMCO a household name.

The film draws from significant research conducted in Dublin and London into social, industrial and personal histories. The narrative is interwoven with contemporary accounts, architectural journals, and newspaper articles from 1939, the year of the building’s erection, to 1975 when the building was scheduled for demolition.

The second phase of their building, dating from 1939, incorporated a modernist concrete and glass tower, designed by Oliver P. Bernard. A noted architect, scenic and industrial designer, and a champion of modern engineering techniques and materials, Bernard is credited with being instrumental in moving conservative Victorian British taste in a modernist European direction.

This film is part of the two–venue exhibition On Seeing Only Totally New Things at The RHA and Oonagh Young Gallery, Dublin. Supported through funding from The Arts Council, and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council.

Gavin Murphy is a Dublin-based artist and curator with a long engagement with artist-led projects and collaborative initiatives. He is currently a director/curator of the artist–run space, Pallas Projects/Studios, was coordinator of House Projects – a series of seven exhibitions in New York, London and Ireland, and was editor of the accompanying 200–page publication. He is the recipient of various Arts Council awards and residencies at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces, Melbourne, and Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Dublin. His series of works On Seeing Only Totally New Things includes the exhibition Remember at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and a forthcoming publication in collaboration with design studio Atelier David Smith.

To coincide with Gavin Murphy’s exhibition On Seeing Only Totally New Things, DoCoMoMo Ireland and the RHA present the lecture/talk "Remembering Modern Architecture: destruction or restoration" on Thursday, 18th of October at 5.30pm. The discussion panel will be formed by Catherine Croft, Director of the 20th Century Society, Gavin Murphy, artist, Patrick T. Murphy, Director of the RHA and Ellen Rowley, co-founder of the Irish chapter of DoCoMoMo (Documentation Conservation Modern Movement).

The lecture is open to the public and will be held in the Friends Room of the RHA . The lecture is free supported by the Irish Architecture Foundation. Booking for this lecture is advised.

Artbeat 26 September 2012 | Sharyn Hayden; Smock Alley Stories

This week’s Artbeat with Des FitzGerald featured live musical comedy with Dublin comedian Sharyn Hayden and Caoimhe Connolly of the Smock Alley Theatre, who are embarking on an interesting social history project.

How to describe Sharyn? Best to let her press release do the talking: "Sharyn Hayden hosted Ireland’s very first musical comedy awards (The IMCAs!) in April of this year. The event was received with rousing applause and various confrontational conversations about WHAT THE EFF IS MUSICAL COMEDY??! but she survived it nonetheless. In defiance, she has founded the first musical comedy club in Ireland, The Fandora Club, which runs monthly in Dublin. She will also host a musical comedy showcase at the inaugural London Irish Comedy Festival in October of this year.

Sharyn’s theatre credits include ‘The Wave’ at the recent Dublin Fringe Festival, ‘Batty Ryan Will Change Your Life!’ with comedian Joe Rooney, one-woman show ‘Up The Duff’ and ‘The Licky Rake Show’ for the ALAF Festival. There are also some pretty cool You Tube videos that you should check out when your boss isn’t looking. In previous carnations, Sharyn has been a singing waitress on Broadway, a schoolteacher and a former actors agent. She probably can’t talk about two out of three of those for legal reasons, but she sure can sing about them".

Caoimhe Connolly of the Smock Alley Theatre joins Artbeat to talk about their interesting social history project involving the venue. She hopes that the collected stories and images about the theatre will powerfully transport former parishioners of Michael and Johns, theatre and Smock Alley regulars and those with an interest in Dublin back to the past.

Artbeat 29 August 2012 | Sam Jackson

New Irish jazz albums don't come around all that often and the path that pianist Sam Jackson has taken to this point is an interesting one. Jackson's disc Sharp & Flat is a blend of jazz, classical and traditional styles, which, at times, reminded me of the thoughtful European chamber jazz of Munich’s ECM label. It's not surprising therefore to note that the album was mixed by Jan Erik Kongshaug who has worked with some of the greatest jazz artists including ECM artist Keith Jarrett. Reflecting Jackson's nomadic lifestyle touring the globe with Druid Theatre and Moya Brennan, the music was recorded in Europe, the US and New Zealand - along with family flats and, intriguingly, a tree house in Kilkenny.

Sam Jackson will be in concert on Monday 1st October in the NCH, joined by Shane O'Donovan on drums, Dave Mooney on double bass with some special guests on the night.

Monday 1st October 8pm

Artbeat 6 June 2012 - Science Gallery's Hack the City; Dublin Writers Festival

Des FitzGerald spoke with Fionn Kidney of the Science Gallery about their newest exhibition. 'Hack the City', (in the words of the Science Gallery) "will be a city-wide summer programme that will call for citizens of Dublin to join leading artists, designers and scientists to retake control of the city. It will ask how can we tweak, modify, adapt and hack the city to create a more responsive environment that is a better place for us all to live. It will explore how can we strengthen the social bonds of the city, reintroduce a craft approach to material needs and reinvigorate disused space". See sciencegallery.com for more details.

Dublin Writers Festival is in full swing and programme director Liam Browne joined Claire Bradley for a chat. dublinwritersfestival.com for further details
